You would see them for afar on a clear and starless sky and think that these are a big group of fireflies congregating in a field. The soft yellow light emitted from them gives out a sense of wonderment, drawing you closer and closer to the source. These are wish lanterns, also known as sky lanterns in some parts of the world, whose origins are traced to the early Chinese civilization. Nowadays people use them in events to give drama and to signal the conclusion of the activities in others. In some cases, the lighting of the lanterns is an event by itself. More popularly known in the United States as wish lanterns, people would write on the lanterns or on an attached slip of paper and light up a candle in the middle of the lantern. Hot air rises which makes the lantern float in the air, suspended for a few minutes until the flame is extinguished.
